Xerox Phaser 6180 Toner Printer Review
Xerox Phaser 6180 Toner Printer Overview
The newly launched Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer (Phaser 6180/N printer) offers a number of great features: small desktop footprint, single-pass vertical paper path, and exceptional build quality. With the always reliable and helpful Xerox support and documentation, the Xerox Phaser 6180/N toner printer is a sound printer choice for any growing small business.
Paper Handling of the Xerox Phaser 6180 Toner Printer
The Xerox Phaser 6180/N toner printer has a 250-sheet main paper drawer in the base and a 150-sheet manual tray. The Phaser 6180’s manual tray feeds its pages through the front of the main paper drawer. The 6180 Toner printer’s envelopes feed only from the manual tray, where users have the ability to stack them up to 15 mm high. Users can increase the printer’s max. paper capacity to 950 sheets. This is accomplished by adding an optional 550-sheet drawer (costing $399 at retail). Additionally, users can add a duplexer for double-sided printing (costing $199 at retail).
Printing Capabilities of the Xerox Phaser 6180 Toner Printer
The Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer supports both PostScript and PCL printing. In our in-office tests, we used Xerox’s instructions when reviewing the print speed and quality using the PostScript driver. Our results indicated the text printed at a speedy 23.7 ppm. This is close to the competitor’s rates of 25.3 pages per minute. The Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer provided output quality that was somewhat mixed. Comparing it to leading competitors, the Phaser 6180/N was slightly worse. Although the Phaser 6180’s text had a slate-gray appearance, it was otherwise sharp and high legible.

The Phaser 6180 ink had an attractive glossy sheen. Line art from the Xerox 6180 showed slight interference patterns in blocks of closely spaced lines. In testing, the gray scale sample that was printed came out too dark and appeared to have little contrast and no detail in shadows. The Xerox 6180’s color images that were printed on plain paper looked grainy. They also appeared to have some halo artifacts, where the edges had been over-sharpened.
Interface Elements of the Xerox Phaser 6180 Toner Printer
The front of the Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer folds down to reveal the 6180 toner cartridges. These cartridges utilize the traditional four color approach of black toner, cyan toner, magenta toner, and yellow toner. The Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer’s control panel features a two-line backlit LCD for easy setup. The Xerox Phaser 6180/N toner printer comes with toner cartridges rated for 3000 black pages and 2000 color pages.
The Xerox Phaser 6180 fuser, Xerox Phaser 6180 transfer unit, and Xerox Phaser 6180 feed roller will need less frequent replacement. As expected, the standard Xerox warranty covers those for the first year. During that period, a typical small office’s estimated costs per page are roughly 2.4 cents for each black-and-white page and 12.2 cents for each color page. The Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer’s numbers are close to the averages for color lasers we’ve tested and experienced recently.
As we would expect, the Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer’s documentation is very thorough and comprehensive. In addition to the standard Phaser 6180 owner’s manual, Xerox also includes a plastic pouch for attaching the Owner’s Manual to the side of the printer.
Concluding Thoughts - Xerox Phaser 6180 Toner Printer
Overall, the Xerox Phaser 6180 toner printer is a solid choice for small offices looking for a robust, high quality machine that produces both color and b/w prints. Other machines may have lower upfront costs, but the Xerox Phaser 6180’s value, reliability and strong support are hard to overlook.
