Cheap Printer Ink from Kodak & Memjet

Memjet inkjet printersHP (Hewlett-Packard) owns the printer ink and printer toner market. With greater than 45% market share, nearly every printer manufacturer is gunning for HP.

Trying to angle its way into the digital imaging arena, Eastman Kodak and startup The Memjet Cos. stepping to the forefront. In February of 2007, Kodak went after the lucrative market for inkjet printers when it unveiled printers that utilize lower-priced replacement cartridges.

Recently, Kodak has stated that the organization surpassed its 2007 sales goals. Analysts are quickly point out however, that those targets were set at very modest levels and their overall impact to date reflects just a small fraction of the total inkjet market.

Kodak Inkjet PrintersFollowing Kodak’s discount inkjet printer introduction, a company named Memjet unveiled what many consider a technological breakthrough for inkjet printers. Through eye-popping printer speeds and high-quality prints, Memjet wants to license its technology to third party printer manufacturers (rather than design and develop its own printer lineup). To date, Memjet has yet to announce any licensees of its printer inkjet technology.

As one might expect, many analysts say Kodak and Memjet face an uphill climb.
