There are a lot of easy ways to do that which are also very eco-friendly. Here are just a few ways to stretch your dollars without sacrificing your printing.

Print Less — There are a lot of ways to accomplish this. One of the simplest is to simply send information to friends and co-workers via e-mail, or put a document on a shared server for review electronically. You can also print or photocopy on both sides of the paper, cutting your sheet count in half.

Printing in Draft Mode — If you aren’t checking quality or color, then printing drafts in draft mode will cut down on conserve toner use.

Buy a New Machine — This may seem counter-intuitive at first, but there are several good reasons to do this. First, many new machines are Energy Star compliant, so they not only use less energy when they run, they will also power themselves down when not in use, saving you money. Second, many of the available MFC printers will save money, as they take the place of three machines (printer, fax, and copier).

Use Eco-friendly Products — Most toner cartridges use some recycled parts, and there is a wide variety of good-quality paper available with 30% post-consumer content. This not only saves money, but helps to sustain our natural resources.

These days it seems as if everyone is trying to be or at least claiming to be environmentally friendly. A major source of waste comes from our everyday printing both in the office and at home. We have laser printers, inkjet printer, fax machines, and solid ink printers being advertised as being Green.

The reality is that different technologies can help consumers with this concern. The paper used during printing is the cause of 80% of a laser printer’s environmental impact. Users can consider if a document needs to be printed which will help reduce the number of pages thrown away. In an office’s everyday printing one page in every six is printed unnecessarily.

When looking into making your office more of green environment take into consideration the options that are out there for you. Ricoh has a line of GelSprinters using gel-based technology that are said to emit less ozone and dust. Xerox’s solid ink line needs no plastic cartridge to contain it, saving on waste. Lexmark has multiple lines of high yield toners with a built in recycling program to help adopt improved print management. HP has solutions in Eco Printing Assessments that benchmark your printing and provide plans to reduce costs and improve standards.

In our current times every little bit will help and small changes can make your home or office a friend of the environment.

Reducing paper usage is important, but along with reducing paper use, the type of paper used is equally important. Recycled paper is offered by all the key players out there. You’ll find HP paper, Epson paper, and a variety of specialty paper.

Printer Paper – Then and Now

Fifteen to twenty years ago, paper was grainy, off-white in color, and had a shorter life. Luckily, recycled paper has come a long way since then and is now equivalent to virgin paper in terms of finish, opacity, whiteness and grams per square meter (a measure of the weight of the paper).

And in terms of the production cycle, using recycled paper fibers (the individual strands of paper that make up the pulp) to make usable pulp consumes less energy and water, than using fibers directly from a tree when manufacturing virgin paper (about 60% to 70% less energy, and 55% less water).

What is Recycled Paper?

The fiber composition is what is taken into consideration when you read the percentage of recycled content on a package of paper. For example, when a package is labeled as “paper is 80% recycled.” That indicates 80% of the fiber comes from recycled content, and 20% comes from virgin fibers.

Pre-consumer pulp is made up of production waste and generally does not require de-inking – the process in which printing ink is removed from recycled paper in order for it to be reused in the production of new paper. But, pre-consumer pulp is limited in supply. That is why the term ‘post-consumer’ is most often seen – this means that recycled pulp consists of paper from offices and homes after use.

Concord Supplies offers a wide selection of discount printer paper: HP Paper | Epson Paper | Specialty Paper

These post-consumer paper products that are recovered for recycling reduces the amount of virgin trees needed to produce paper and cardboard products. And, purchasing products made from post-consumer recycled materials supports the markets for materials recovered by recycling services across the globe. Higher-grade papers generally require some virgin pulp to achieve comparable quality levels as the quality of fiber degrades each time it passes through the recycling process.

Bleaching is the process of whitening recycled paper, which uses different chemicals including chlorine.

What Type of Printer Paper to Buy

Here’s the key element of the decision process. When deciding what kind of recycled paper to purchase, try to purchase paper that is chlorine-free and acid-free, which means it has a lower environmental impact in terms of toxins used in the manufacturing process.

This has to be one of the top five customer support questions we get in a day at Concord Supplies: “Where do I send my used ink/toner cartridges for recycling?” My environmentally-friendly self cringes when I have to tell people that we do not have a program in place to recycle used ink and toner cartridges. Never fear, dear reader, there are plenty of places out there that do recycle, and you can feel doubly good about using them since many are for a wide variety of charities.

The first place I tell people to look for recycling options is the local school districts or churches. Many of them will have a recycling program set up for fund raising purposes. Additionally, your local recycling center can help you find local options.

When that fails, then there is my favorite option: surf the ‘net! A quick search resulted in a number of viable options, just a few of which I will list for you.

Some programs place an emphasis on the environmental impact of recycling. RecyclePlace.com has a wide variety of information available on recycling toner cartridges. Recycle4Charity.com takes a variety of empty inkjet cartridges and toner cartridges, as well as used drum units. Brands include Brother, Epson, HP, Lexmark, and Pitney Bowes. They have an easily accessible list of cartridges they will take, and will even pick up your qualifying materials. Best of all, they benefit a number of national charities, including Habitat for Humanity, The Smile Train, and Boys Town. Some charities have their own recycling program. The Transverse Myelitis Association has a recycling program that benefits research and education programs for this disease. Likewise, your local PetSmart has information available for recycling used printer cartridges to benefit homeless pets.

So, go ahead! Recycle!

This morning a great article appeared in the Washington Post describing how each one of us can help to live a greener and more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. More specifically, its geared to those of us that utilize computers, computer technologies, and printers extensively in our everyday life.

Give Earth Day is coming up, we thought this article would be appropriate and very timely.

Here’s a few of the article’s highlights…

“Well, if you’re reading this, it’s a pretty safe bet you’re using a computer, and computers generate waste in all kinds of ways. But by changing just a few habits, you can keep more stuff out of landfills, save energy, and even tuck a few extra dollars in your wallet. Here are five ideas to get you started.”

“You can save more paper by shrinking your text and printing two pages side by side on one sheet of paper, if your printer driver allows it. (You’d better have good eyesight, though.) In Windows XP, choose Print, and then select Preferences or Print Setup. Look for an option called ‘Pages per Sheet’, and set it to 2.

If you print a lot from the Web, you should absolutely download a copy of the ad-supported GreenPrint World so that you can trim the stuff you don’t need printed, which saves both paper and ink (or toner).

Read the entire article on Greener Computing.

This Xerox printer ink and toner recycling tool is designed to help customers reduce their environmental impact and printing costs.

Printer Ink & Toner Quick Evaluation Tool

Xerox’s new environmentally-oriented software tool measures the overall impact a company’s document and printer technologies have on the environment. The Xerox Sustainability Calculator evaluates the current office environment of printers, copiers and multifunction printer devices and then measures environmental benefits that could be achieved in potentially reducing energy and paper use, solid waste, water, air and greenhouse gas emissions.

Xerox Recycling Tool Offers Fact-based Analysis

The Xerox printer tool provides customers the first fact-based measurement of their environmental footprint.

As outlined by John Kelly, president, Xerox Global Services North America, “This calculator cracks the code to help offices of any size really understand just how ‘green’ their offices are or could be. The same people who are environmentally conscious at home are starting to bring this awareness to work, but in many cases, they didn’t know where to start.”

Save yourself money and protect the environment, buy Discount Xerox Supplies, Xerox Ink and Xerox Toner.

Business leaders and office managers can quickly assess their environmental footprint through a scaled-down version of the calculator that can be found at this location on Xerox’s website: Xerox Sustainability Calculator. Visitors can get a sneak peek at how the calculator can effectively help their small, medium or large business. The quick Web-based assessment provides how-to tips and advice on smart ways to make offices more environmentally friendly and greener.
