There are several things to consider when choosing a trash bag.

1. Do you really need an actual trash bag? Lots of people make a big deal out of reusable bags. There are definite benefits to these, but there are also reasons to not use them. Paper grocery sacks or empty boxes can easily serve as holding receptacles for recyclables such as newspapers, and plastic shopping bags can be used for wet garbage, or to hold laundry on a vacation. While reusable bags definitely reduce waste, reusing bags you get in other situations can help as well.
2. What are you going to be throwing out? Something that is soft and flexible, such as old clothing or bedding, might be able to go in a thinner bag than something with sharp edges or corners, such as boxes or books. Check the packaging to see what mil the bags are. The higher the number, the thicker/stronger the bag.
3. Is a less expensive bag really a savings? Cheap trash bags are no bargain if they split open on the way to the garbage can and leave a mess. If you need to use more bags to dispose of the same amount of garbage, you may end up spending more in the long run.
4. What size receptacle will you be using? A 30-gallon trash bag is overkill if you’re using it to line a desk side waste can. Try a kitchen trash bag instead.
5. Does that really need to be thrown out, or can it be recycled in some way? Remember your three r’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. If composting is an option, try that to reduce the amount of food waste. Likewise, if old clothing or furniture is still in good shape, consider donating it to a charity, or selling it at a garage sale.
6. Don’t forget to check for recycled or biodegradable trash bags. Both are available, helping to reduce the long-term build up of solid waste.

Don’t Worry, Here’s 3 Great Tips to Saving the Whiteboard

We’ll here’s 3 simple tips to making that dry erase board new again.

1. How about some good old fashioned elbow grease and some Expo Dry Erase cleaner.  Put your muscles into it and you can rub that mark right off the board.
2. Use nail polish remover and it’ll work like a charm, but can get messy so you will need a big bottle and probably clean twice over once to get the marks off and the other to get the stains.
3. Try writing over the mark with another permanent marker and wiping it off the board immediately. This approach helps dissolve the underlying layer of marker, but you need to be quick and it only works if the stain mark is small.

Give these 3 solutions a try and see if they work.  I’ve had great success with all of them and I’m sure you’ll find great results as well.  If you find other cleaning supplies that do the trick, let us know.  Next time, make sure you use dry erase markers.

Ballpoint Pens

Ballpoint pens dispense oil-based pen ink by rolling a small hard sphere across paper.  The ballpoint is usually 0.7 mm to 1.2 mm in size and is typically made of brass, steel or tungsten carbide. The ballpoint pen automatically dispenses ink onto the paper via a little ball. The pen ink dries almost immediately on contact with paper given its consistency and chemical makeup. Ballpoint pens are generally inexpensive and reliable. Currently, ballpoint pens are the most popular tool for everyday writing.

Rollerball Pens

Rollerball pens dispense a water-based pen ink or gel ink through a ball tip.  In many respects, these are similar to that of a ballpoint pen. The thicker ink is more-easily absorbed by paper than oil-based ink, and the pen moves more easily across a writing surface. Rollerball pens were initially designed to combine the convenience of a ballpoint pen with the smooth writing effect of a fountain pen. Gel pens are available in a range of pen ink colors and point sizes.

Fountain Pens

Fountain pens use water-based pen ink delivered through a nib at the tip of the pen. The pen ink flows from a reservoir through a feed slot to the nib.  Then, the ink flows through the nib driven by capillary action and gravity. The pen tip nib has no moving parts and delivers ink through a thin slit to the porous writing surface. A fountain pen ink reservoir can be refillable or use a disposable ink cartridge.

Markers & Highlighters

Markers or felt-tip pens have a porous tip that is constructed of a fibrous material. The smallest (finest-tipped markers) are used for writing on paper or other writable services. Medium-tip markers are often used by children for coloring. Larger markers made by brands such as Expo, are used for writing on other surfaces such as cardboard boxes or large post it boards. Markers with wide tips, bright ink and a transparent color are called highlighters.  These are used to mark existing text and sold by names such as Hi-Liter.
